This is a role in the Listed Sales and Trading team (LST).
LST is responsible for the development of equity sales and trading applications for listed products. LST systems capture order instructions from clients electronically and via phone, route those orders to execution venues and manage the full status of all orders in real time. LST systems are complex, enterprise solutions with demanding requirements for reliability, scalability, availability and throughput. Each system comprises multiple components developed in technologies including C++, C#, KDB, Python, and running on both windows and unix platforms. The team is a virtual global team numbering nearly 200 members globally, including 20 in Shanghai. The Shanghai team works on a wide range of projects and systems including both Asia-focussed and global projects. A substantial proportion of projects are owned and project managed directly from Shanghai. Team members will contribute to the full software development life-cycle including requirements analysis, design, implementation and testing and support (third-line).

The role is a development role which merges aspects of developer, business analyst and tester into a single role. Morgan Stanley possesses a very large library of in-house developed components that can be configured and interfaced with one another in many different ways. The role is to design, manage, trouble-shoot and modify systems based on those components. The role is a highly technical one, requiring a strong understanding of IT design principles, performance optimization, inter-process messaging, and process design and support in a very large and complex enterprise architecture. Many projects will require aspects of hands-on coding to modify existing components, or less commonly, to develop new ones, but this is only a portion of the role. The successful applicant will also be expected to take part in business analysis, process and systems design, system configuration and support (3rd level only), and system testing.

The ideal candidate would have a good general knowledge of the Unix operating system, experience writing production code using languages such as Perl/Python/shell scripts, experience working with enterprise-scale distributed systems, basic knowledge of computer systems, data structures and algorithms, and an appetite for solving complex software engineering problems in a global setting.

Our team is a global team and interactions with developers across Asia (as well as Europe and the US) occur frequently, often daily. For this reason, strong English communication skills are a must. The Shanghai team has been established for over eight years, and this maturity gives us considerable opportunity to influence global strategy, dictate our own direction and drive our own projects.*LI-AW1
