Goldman Sachs' interns fell 30% in two years, and getting an internship is 2x harder

If you want a job at Goldman Sachs, you probably need an internship. But internships at Goldman Sachs are not what they were. At least not compared to the halcyon days of 2022 when they were far more plentiful than they were in 2024.

Goldman Sachs' newly released 2024 intern survey reveals that the firm had 2,600 interns in summer 2024, its lowest number for at least four years. It's down nearly 30% compared to the peak of 3,700 interns during the unusually buoyant year after the pandemic in 2022.

Even in good years, getting an internship at Goldman Sachs isn't easy. In 2022, Goldman had 236,000 applications for 3,700 places, or 64 applicants per place. In 2024, Goldman said previously that it had 315,000 applicants for its 2,600 places, or 121 applicants per place. Getting an internship at Goldman Sachs in 2024 was therefore twice as hard as two years ago.

Goldman Sachs declined to comment for this article. The firm didn't disclose intern applicant numbers for 2023 or for 2021.

As Goldman has trimmed its intern numbers, it's also been recruiting interns from fewer universities. During the 2022 peak, it hired from 600 schools. This year it was down to 485.

Goldman Sachs is accepting applications for its 2025 internships right now. If you haven't applied already, you're advised to do so soon. Applicants are usually accepted on a first come first served basis.
