Commodity jobs in Singapore
Commodities are raw materials or agricultural products which can be bought and sold. The most commonly traded commodities include precious metals, wheat, oil, gas, cattle, coffee, sugar, cotton and renewable energies. Most commodities professionals are employed by either commodity trading houses, who trade in the commodities per se, or by investment banks, who deal in commodity derivative products.
Trading Jobs
A commodities trader will typically specialise in one type of commodity and will develop an in-depth knowledge of the relevant market. As well as buying and selling commodities and commodity derivatives on behalf of the company or client, traders also undertake regular research and market analysis.
Commodities traders work in a very stressful and high pressure environment. Strong negotiation skills are essential, as is the ability to make on the spot decisions.
Trade Support Jobs
Client-facing jobs such as sales or origination, analyst, strategist, risk manager and IT support are usually termed trade support roles. These are good 'ways in' to commodity trading, and support staff often take the leap into trading.
Sales jobs in commodities are about developing relationships with clients, be they commodities producers or consumers. A good standard of literacy, numeracy and presentation is required, as commodities sales staff must understand the commodities markets thoroughly in order to explain strategies to clients. Developing pitches, report writing and client presentations are all part of the role.
Structuring Jobs
A highly quantitative job, structuring involves the statistical analysis of the markets, and the creation of new products to offer clients. Most investment banks prefer junior candidates to have a Masters degree in physics, quantitative analytics or other mathematical based subject.
A strong focus is necessary to succeed in becoming hired for a commodity job, and exceptional attention to detail is also needed.
Careers in commodities can be exciting and highly lucrative. Big risks are taken for potentially huge returns, but it is an extremely competitive job market, with no clear career path or qualification structure.
