Compliance / Legal
Since the global banking crisis of 2007-08, there has been an ever increasing need for legal and compliance professionals in the banking and finance world. Regulations are being tightened all the time, and it is the job of the compliance professional to ensure that their company stays on the right side of the law.
Compliance jobs can be found right across the financial services and banking sector. Banks, asset managers, hedge funds, insurance companies and others must ensure that they are in line with the regulations imposed by the country they are working in.
On the other side of the coin, compliance professionals are also employed by financial services regulatory bodies such as the MAS in Singapore, the FSA in the UK and the SEC in the US.
What does a Compliance Manager Do?
A compliance manager acts as a legal and regulatory point of reference for all of his or her employer's activities. This involves ensuring that front office employees understand their responsibilities, as well as training and educating traders and sales people in compliance matters.
Types of Compliance Work
Sales and trading compliance professionals often specialise in a particular product such as bonds, equities or derivatives. They work with traders and salespeople to ensure compliance with all local regulations.
Control room compliance is a more centralised affair, and involves maintaining the bank's restricted list and checking for abnormal dealing activity. When someone's activity needs to be carefully watched, it will the control room compliance manager doing the watching.
Some compliance jobs involve a great deal of monitoring and surveillance, particularly of transactions which might indicate fraudulent activity - insider dealing, for example, or market manipulation.
Anti-money laundering compliance officers, as the title suggests, are concerned with preventing money laundering, where the financial proceeds of illegal activity are made to appear legitimate.
Training
The International Compliance Association (ICA) leads government accredited training and qualification programs for compliance professionals in Singapore.
