Jobs in Equities
Equities are stocks and shares, which are traditionally traded on large global stock exchanges. Equities professionals are recruited by major banks, brokerage houses, agency traders, asset management firms and hedge funds.
Types of Equity Jobs
Most equity professionals are either equities salespeople, equities traders or equities analysts.
The equity sales professional will liaise directly with clients, advising them when to buy or sell particular stocks. Clients may be individuals, pension funds or other institutional investors.
Equities traders execute the actual trade on behalf of the client, acting as market makers. Many equities are now traded by algorithmic trading systems, but human expertise is still required in order to obtain the best price in the market.
An equity research analyst follows a group of 5-15 companies in a given sector, and becomes an expert on their financial activities. Through financial modelling, they are able to predict company performance, and create reports for investment managers.
Routes into Equity
One of the most common ways to start an equities career is via the research route. Graduates are employed as equity research analysts - expect to spend 2-3 months in training before being assigned to a team headed by a senior analyst.
Major banks also recruit graduates for junior equity sales roles. A good business degree is essential, and many applicants have an MBA.
Skills Required
Equity research positions require perseverance and a good eye for details, as well as excellent analytical skills. Good people skills are also necessary, as analysts spend a good deal of time in contact with the management teams of the firms they're following.
Equities salespeople require excellent presentational and communication skills, while traders need to be able to think on their feet and take a decisive approach to their work.
