Human resources (HR) professionals work across the finance industry helping banks and companies manage their staff - their human capital. From investment and retail banks to accountancy firms, funds and insurance companies, virtually every mid sized firm upwards has a HR department.
What do HR Jobs Involve?
Human resources professionals can undertake a wide variety of roles within the core human resources specialism. A typical role might include recruitment of new staff, management of the contracts and conditions of existing staff, handling employee discipline and disputes and ensuring that the employer respects the relevant employment laws and practices.
Within the financial services market, HR staff are also often responsible for carrying out appraisals, which in turn will influence the size of staff bonuses.
Who to Work For
HR jobs can be found in the in-house HR departments of major banks and corporations, as well as in recruitment firms, outsourcing organisations, head-hunters and search firms.
The educational background of successful human resources professionals is diverse; there are many university degrees which might provide a successful route into this field. To work in HR in the finance world, it's helpful to have a business or finance related degree, however, perhaps with an HR specialisation.
Many HR professionals start out in a relatively junior role, such as HR administration assistant, and progress up the ladder from there. The vast majority of human resources professionals are generalists in this field, but some do develop specialisms such as succession planning, talent management or employment law.
Human resources professionals need to be compassionate but level-headed, respectful but firm. Excellent communication skills are required, and good negotiation and mediation skills are also useful. You will be working with sensitive information, so confidentiality is a key requirement, as is an ability to put people at their ease.
