Jobs in Investment Banking / M & A
Investment banking is a wide ranging term, but here we are referring specifically to M&A (mergers and acquisitions) roles, plus the infrastructure and financing elements which make an M&A deal happen.
M&A jobs involve advising clients on mergers and acquisitions. Large investment banks usually handle deals worth over $100m, while advisory boutiques or the Big Four accounting firms usually handle smaller deals. M&A professionals are employed by all of these.
Entry Level M&A Roles
Entry level roles in mergers and acquisitions are usually analyst positions. The work here involves a great deal of financial modelling, and the creation of pitchbooks. Pitchbooks are the marketing documents banks use to sell their M&A services and to offer advice on which companies a client should be dealing with.
M&A analysts often specialise in particular sectors, and in-depth sector knowledge is always helpful in securing a position. Almost all entry level positions require a degree in business or finance, with MBAs increasingly preferred.
Senior M&A Roles
Senior M&A bankers take over a deal once the pitchbook is complete. The role involves extensive client liaison, and you will also be required to originate or bring in new business and new potential clients. M&A careers tend to follow a straightforward trajectory, with employees moving up the ranks from a junior position.
Increasingly, senior M&A bankers not only advise clients on the deal in question, but also on the financing required for the deal.
For a senior M&A role, excellent communication and social skills are required, as well as a sound commercial awareness. By the time an M&A professional reaches senior management level, they will have developed a very strong expertise in their chosen industry sector, be it telecoms, entertainment, media, tech or energy.
Regulatory Roles
The Singapore Code on Takeovers and Mergers is the code governing M&A transactions in Singapore. As an alternative M&A career route, there are many openings for professionals in the regulatory industry.
