Public relations professionals are the buffer between the media and their employer. Journalists will contact the PR staff for research notes and news. Most banks and major corporations employ their own in-house public relations staff, but some do outsource the job to PR agencies.
Public relations professionals typically have a degree in PR, business or other relevant field, or perhaps a background in journalism. It is possible to obtain an entry level PR job as a fresh graduate, but most employers prefer to see some sector experience first.
Investor Relations Opportunities
Investor relations professionals distribute company information to existing and potential shareholders. This can be a demanding role, which requires excellent people and communication skills, as well as an ability to think on your feet and to handle unexpected events.
Much investor relations work involves direct contact with investors and other interested parties, either face to face, by phone or at fund-raising roadshows. You will also attend press conferences, shareholder meetings and private meetings with investors.
It is rare for investor relations jobs to be available to graduates; by the nature of the role, several years of experience in the financial world is normally considered essential.
Junior positions in investor relations tend to be at the analyst level, during which you will analyse and report on what investors and analysts are saying about the company. Approximately five years of experience in a junior role is required before progressing to investor relations manager level; a further ten years or more may be required before reaching IR director level.
