Private Equity / Venture Capital
Private equity jobs are among the most sought after in the finance world, and this is a fiercely competitive job market - not least because there are relatively few jobs available compared to other finance areas.
To build a private equity career, you will typically work with either venture capital funds or buyout funds.
Venture Capital
Venture capital investors focus on young companies and startups. Venture capitalists may fund as seed investors at the very beginning, or at a later stage shortly before the company floats.
Buyout Funds
Buyout funds usually invest in established companies, and usually have control of the company they're investing in. Typically, a company's assets are used at collateral for loans to finance the deal.
Private Equity Career Roles
At a junior level, private equity professionals work as analysts. An analyst will do the financial modelling and statistical work to establish whether a particular deal is viable or not.
Higher up the ladder come the principals, who take the decision on whether to go with a deal or not, and then guide the process if the deal goes ahead.
Partners, the most senior private equity professionals, bring in new business and liaise with investors.
Getting into Private Equity
Few private equity funds recruit graduates, or even MBA candidates. Most candidates are headhunted from existing analyst roles at bulge bracket banks. It is notoriously difficult to break into private equity, so interested candidates will want to pay attention to networking. If you have a related background in corporate finance, strategy or business development, that can sometimes be sufficient to make the leap to PE, but by no means always.
