Sales and marketing professionals play a highly visible role in the financial services industry. From pure salespeople to marketing professionals, PR experts and sales-traders, there are many opportunities for those who excel at sales and client relations.
Sales people are employed by investment banks, retail banks and many other financial institutions and companies. Sales staff usually focus on one type of product, such as government bonds, derivatives or insurance.
A financial marketing role is to develop opportunities to sell products and to create marketing materials and campaigns to that end. Marketers work with advertising and branding. PR professionals, on the other hand, manage the company's image and attempt to control how it is portrayed in the media.
Skills Required for marketing
To succeed in any sales job, candidates must be self-confident, outgoing and persuasive. People skills are essential here, as is plenty of self motivation. The hours can be long, as salespeople communicate with clients for several hours before and after the markets open and close. They must also spend time reviewing the relevant news and current events, so that they are up to date with everything the investor or client might ask.
A flexible nature is also required for sales jobs, and candidates must be able to react quickly to fast-moving situations.
Marketing professionals usually require strong creative skills, and an in-depth understanding of investor and customer behaviour. People skills are also needed, as a senior marketing manager may be responsible for sponsoring events, running road shows and other client-facing roles.
Getting Into Sales and Marketing
Much of sales is a natural skill rather than an acquired ability, so skill at interview and a previous strong sales performance can count for more than qualifications.
Marketing professionals, however, typically require at least a business or finance degree, and preferably an MBA.
Sales and marketing is one area of finance where communication skills are paramount, and it helps to have genuine passion for the world of finance too.
