The Role Responsibilities
Business Advisory and Legal Transactional Support
  • The delivery of commercially focused, risk-adjusted and sophisticated legal advice to the Consumer, Private and Business Banking ("CPBB") business of SC, and in particular, relating to: the Personal and Business Banking ("BB") businesses; Banking Products; Digital Banking initiatives; and third-party partnerships; including their related business, risk management, and country legal stakeholders.
  • Contribution to the day-to-day management of the Group's legal enforceability risk relating to the above areas.
  • To support the implementation of global standards and initiatives for legal matters in relation to CPBB.
  • To work closely with, coordinate, lead and support group and country legal teams supporting CPBB and drive operational efficiencies/ improvements.
  • Support the development, maintenance and review of global template legal documents for CPBB to ensure fitness for purposes.
Strategy and Leadership
  • Support the execution of the strategy for the legal support and product development relating to: the Personal and BB businesses; Banking Products; Digital Banking initiatives; and third-party partnerships, with overarching accountability to the Head, Legal, BB, Banking Products and Digital Banking, CPBB Legal and General Counsel CPBB.
  • Maintain close relationships with CPBB stakeholders (including Business Risk Management leads), and assist relevant legal teams to interface with and support such stakeholders.
  • Promote the culture and practice of compliance with legal standards (including conducting business within legal and regulatory requirements, and to high ethical standards) within the Bank and embed a "Here for Good" culture consistent with the Group's Code of Conduct.
Governance
  • Within the Group's overall Risk Management Framework, to support the establishment and maintenance of appropriate risk based legal frameworks for identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, mitigating and reporting legal risks across CPBB.
  • Support the development of appropriate legal policies, procedures and standards; including for the management of legal risk relating to product structuring and governance.
  • Establish and maintain effective processes (including the: provision of training, advice and support; and solicitation of input from appropriate stakeholders and committees) to ensure that policies, procedures and standards to address legal risks are effectively implemented across CPBB.
  • Support the preparation of reports to relevant Group and Business risk and control committees and management groups on key legal risks and issues.
  • Support Legal in the governance of CPBB by reviewing papers tabled at the relevant governance committees to ensure they clearly articulate legal risk issues and mitigants and are appropriately approved.
General
  • Work with the specialist Group Legal Dispute Resolution Team and SC's specialist restructuring bankers from time to time on litigious or restructuring cases.
  • Work with various other Legal teams and CPBB Compliance teams to support CPBB initiatives.
  • Where external counsel is appointed, liaise with external counsel and ensure the scope of work is defined and appropriate, oversee the quality of work and manage external legal costs, and ensure appropriate overall matter management.

Our Ideal Candidate
  • Qualified to practice as a solicitor/attorney or barrister/advocate in a common law jurisdiction such as England and Wales, New York, Hong Kong or Singapore.
  • 8+ years of post-qualification experience at a first-rate international bank or international law firm.
  • Retail banking experience in private practice or in-house, including handling complex transactions, very much preferred (although we welcome strong applicants with an interest and willingness to learn).
  • Experience in legal and regulatory risk management.
  • Experience in the banking industry, including demonstrated success in a similar role.
  • Sharp business acumen (including ability to assess risk and appropriate levels of return), strong transactional leadership qualities, excellent interpersonal skills and multi cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Ability to manage geographically dispersed and highly varied customer and product base.
  • Ability to collaborate and work dynamically with country, regional, group, business and risk stakeholders.
  • Understanding of best practice risk management techniques and frameworks.
  • Understanding of the key features of relevant laws and regulations relevant to the Group.
  • Sound judgement on business practices, regulatory relationship management and reputational risk.
  • Exemplary integrity, ethics, independence and resilience.
  • Personal authority with proven ability to establish relationships with business stakeholders.
