About us

We’re making big changes at Transport for London (TfL). Our CFO function is evolving to ensure a sharp focus on TfL’s core business priorities. We’re doing this by building a new function that acts as the ‘commercial brain’ to the business integrating finance, procurement and supply chain to provide stronger strategic and commercial excellence across our business.

TfL plays a key role in shaping what life is like in London. Our transport infrastructure and public transport network is admired around the world. We are literally changing London for the future – making it one of the best cities to live, work and visit.

Over 31 million journeys are made across our transport network every day and we do all that we can to keep our city moving, growing and working. To meet the needs of our customers, now and for the future, we’re providing the modern and affordable transport network London needs. To support this, our multi-billion pound programme to make Tube services more reliable, frequent and accessible includes introducing new trains, signalling and track, and rebuilding some of the busiest and most complex stations.

About the role

Working in our Group Financial Planning and Analysis team, directly supporting the CFO and the Executive Team the role will provide analysis and insight to drive forward and support the implementation of TfL’s financial strategy. Alongside this you will also provide thought leadership and develop TfL’s analytical capabilities, reporting and processes around working capital and cash flow management, which is one of our biggest priorities. This is not your typical reporting and analytical role, you’ll be expected to be a true business partner, develop the knowledge and relationships that allow you to initiative, agree, drive and deliver complex projects within our context.

You’ll be the Finance Lead on working capital improvement initiatives, introducing fit for purpose KPIs and analysis so your previous experience of working with procurement organisations, shared service centres, develop actionable plans and helping to shape the working capital management strategies will prove critical to your success in this role. You will also be required to get involved and lead other improvement projects as part of the wider Group Finance and CFO Finance function. We are a cash business and defining and embedding a cash culture in everything we do will be key to the success of our financial strategy and releasing resources to invest in growing and improving our network.

Reporting into the Head of Financial Planning and Analysis, you will be responsible for developing an in depth understanding of end to end business processes that drive the cash inflows and outflows in our organisation, providing recommendations grounded in facts and robust data analysis to drive improvements to our cash and working capital management practices.

This is a senior level leadership role and is central in bringing increased focus and energy into the cash agenda, playing a key role in developing and championing a cash culture throughout the organisation.

About you

You’ll likely be an experienced commercially savvy Finance Leader, already operating at the Senior Manager or Head of level within a large £ multi million complex operational organisation. You’re driven to add value to the business and improve business efficiency. You’ll ideally have a degree in Finance, Economics or a formal accountancy or corporate finance qualification, with strong understanding of financial modelling techniques, linking the three financial statements, and proven experience of working capital improvement initiatives. You will have strong technical and data analytics skills and ability to work independently and pro-actively to develop solutions with minimal guidance.

You’ll have experience of delivering consolidated financial and business operational performance reports to senior audiences to drive financial performance, reduce costs and drive income. Ideally, you’ll have experience of providing the financial support on large-scale working capital improvement initiatives and/or experience of driving a culture of cash in a large operating business. You’ll also have the gravitas to influence a variety of senior stakeholders.

Alongside an extremely strong and progressive finance background, ideally within commercially driven organisations, you’ll also continuously be championing and leading by example showing strong leadership behaviours. As we are transforming it is crucial for our leaders to display positive leadership behaviours for our next cohort of internal leaders to look and aspire to and our current stakeholders to collaborate with.

We are looking for an ambitious, bright and driven finance professional looking to make a difference, create a strong brand and progress to a Head of in the next two to three years. You’ll also be a strategic and expert business partner where market insight, finance leadership, assurance to senior business stakeholders and risk management lies at the core of your strategy.

Efficiency, productivity, innovation and customer service lie at the heart of what we do. We are excited about the journey we’re on and we are looking for leaders who believe in our journey too.
