A newly-created senior finance opportunity has been released by our client, a reputable and highly successful global corporate and investment bank based in the City/London. Our client has been an impressive growth story in the banking sector. They are well-managed business with a thoughtful business plan and stable business base. They also have a reputation for staff retention and developing the careers of their employees. Their tax team is one of the bank's top performing teams and due to continued growth, they are looking for a well-rounded UK Tax Manager to join.

Purpose of role:

  • The key purpose of this job is to ensure that the appropriate members of the Bank's UK group are compliant with their UK Corporation, Value Added Tax and Operational Tax compliance obligations and also to ensure the accurate and timely completion of all tax reporting.
  • The role also supports the UK Head of Tax in providing tax services to Front Office and on Group transactions.

Profile criteria:

  • Qualified candidate with either an accounting (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) or tax qualification (CTA) 
  • Well-rounded tax reporting and compliance skill set covering Operational Tax, Corporation Tax and VAT (if candidates are only bringing 2 of the 3 and want to grow their skills and knowledge in a 3rd area, our client is happy with this)
  • Must have experience in a mainstream tax role (i.e. be a tax specialist rather than a finance professional who has elements of tax reporting and compliance in their role)
  • Would be ideal to have a candidate with banking or financial services experience but our client would be open to non-FS backgrounds as well
  • Either experience gained from industry or those with strong experience in a Big 4 or Top 20 practice in a specialist tax role will also be considered
  • Ideally looking for those working in a medium-sized or large organisation
  • Ideally looking for those who can start in March/April (to help prepare them for their upcoming year-end, but they can be flexible as they know that most will be on a 3-month notice period or waiting for their bonus)
  • Excellent communication skills with good stakeholder management and relationship building skills

About the role:

  • The role is a key element in the processes for calculating and accounting for corporation tax and VAT annually.
  • Contributes to the delivery of approximately 20-30 material tax returns and payments annually.
  • The role will play a key role in ensuring the bank meets its UK operational tax compliance obligations.
  • Maintaining both external and internal relationships with HMRC, professional advisors (EY, etc), OAD, PD, etc.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that 5 x annual corporation tax returns, 20 x quarterly payments on account, quarterly tax accounts and value added tax returns are prepared/done in accordance with UK Tax Regulations.
  • Deal with HMRC enquiries and maintain other aspects of the HMRC relationship.
  • Support the UK Head of Tax on tax matters relating to Front Office and Group Transactions.
  • Ensure that all operational tax returns (FATCA, CRS, etc) are prepared and filed in accordance with the Regulatory requirements.
  • Monitoring and maintaining the SAO governance structure and ensuing annual certifications are filed on a timely basis.
  • Support EMEA tax offices on operational tax matters.
  • Keep up to date with the relevant UK Tax Regulations and ensure that any changes are communicated to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Coach and develop junior staff members.

Desired Experience:

  • Proven post qualification experience in all aspects of tax compliance (preferably Banking Taxation but open to other areas of Financial Services and even outside of Financial Services) 
  • Experience of tax reporting for statutory accounts purposes and group reporting
  • Knowledge of operational tax matters, preferable.
  • Strong technical knowledge of business and operational taxes
  • Experience in dealing with HMRC correspondence, auditors and other stakeholders.
