Job Summary

Barings Data Science group is seeking a seasoned data engineer with proven experience in building robust, maintainable, and performant data pipelines needed for advanced analytical processes in either our London or Charlotte office. The Data Science group creates computational tools to assist in complex decision-making. As such, the group spends significant time researching the best way to elevate our next generation of products. We need an expert engineer to follow suite and ensure the embedding of the best data pipeline architecture to enable these new ideas.

The ideal candidate will be driven by a strong sense of ownership and pride in their work. As this role is primarily execution-driven, successful candidates will be eager to spend the majority of their time applying flexible problem-solving skills and innate curiosity to new challenges. The ideal candidate will have exceptional ability to scope out initiatives into tasks and complete work on schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support of an in-house data platform created to fit analytical needs
  • Architect and construct high-performance, production quality data pipelines for analytical workloads
  • Frequently conduct research on data utilization techniques and communicate findings to the Data Science Committee
  • Scope out initiatives into tasks, estimate required resources, agree on milestones and execute accordingly
  • Collaborate with Data Science Architect to continually enhance and adapt data platform
  • Adhere to relevant data governance policies and best practices when designing and building pipeline


  • Demonstrated ability to build optimized data pipelines with a variety of technology stacks
  • Experience using batch automation tools (Airflow, Luigi, etc) and data pipeline tools (Talend, SSIS, Nifi, etc)
  • Experience working with containerization and Unix systems
  • Advanced programming skills as relate to performant data manipulation at scale, including:
    • Advance knowledge of Analytical SQL (SQL for analytical use cases)
    • Advanced knowledge of utilizing Python for performant data manipulation at scale
    • (Preferably) familiarity with Java
  • Familiarity with various database types (relational, document stores, column stores, kv stores) and the corresponding design considerations for each
  • DevOps best practices with respect to documentation and environment management.
  • Familiarity with dimensional modelling, relational modelling, and NoSql database design
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies
  • Good-to-have, in order of preference: Experience with Java, Apache Drill, Microsoft Azure functionalities
