The free five-hour programme that could land you a job at Citi in Asia
A free online short course that gives students a taste of being an analyst at Citi in Asia – and potentially opens doors to internships and jobs at the bank – has enlisted 473 students from Singapore-based universities as of today. Singaporeans studying overseas have also signed up.
Citi Asia Pacific’s virtual work experience programme was launched earlier this month. While it was developed in Asia, it is open to students enrolled in universities globally. Total numbers now top 6,000, says a Singapore-based spokesperson for the US firm.
The initiative offers two modules, which take between five and seven hours to complete and cover careers in investment banking, and markets and securities services (i.e. sales and trading). Citi will be launching a consumer banking module next month.
Each module contains a case study in which Citi bankers present students with a business problem and invite them to propose a solution. Students with submissions that stand out may be contacted about permanent roles or 2021 summer internships. The bank is also encouraging students to submit self-introduction videos alongside their CVs.
“We think this programme is particularly meaningful at this time as we know that internships are hard to secure – this is as close as you can get – and the situation will continue for months to come,” says the spokesperson, referring to the Covid-19 downturn. “And even students studying overseas can also sign up since it is virtual,” she adds.
While the programme does represent a potential new entrance route into Citi, students will still need to draft a particularly impressive case-study solution to convert the training into a job. The pool of students on the virtual work experience programme vastly exceeds the number of intern and graduate jobs available, and participants will also be competing against hundreds of top students who didn’t do the course. Citi’s current summer internship cohort in Singapore, for example, involves just 76 people.
Regardless of the ultimate jobs outcome at Citi, however, the bank says the programme could boost students employability and increase their knowledge of careers in banking as they sample “life-like on-the-job tasks” and apply their “theoretical knowledge to real-world context”.
Video calls with senior members of Citi’s management team in Asia Pacific as well as online quizzes and a “virtual pub night” are also on the cards. There is currently no cut-off date to complete the programme, says the spokesperson.
