About the role
The position is part of a Digital Operations business unit, the Enterprise Services automation team. As a Principal Solution Architect, the individual will be responsible for creating and designing software solutions, integrations and application architectures that support strategic business growth. The candidate will work closely with the development and delivery teams, providing end-to-end architecture ownership, technical governance and design assurance across cloud, microservices and modern full-stack application delivery. This is a senior individual contributor and technical leadership role.

As a Principal Solution Architect, the individual will be responsible for creating and designing software solutions, integrations and application architectures that support strategic business growth. The candidate will work closely with the development and delivery teams, providing end-to-end architecture ownership, technical governance and design assurance across cloud, microservices and modern full-stack application delivery. Role Responsibilities
- Define, own and maintain end-to-end solution architecture for Digital Capabilities applications, integrations and shared platforms
- Provide design leadership across full-stack development squads, working closely with the Tech Lead to translate architecture into delivery plans.
- Create architectural blueprints, target-state designs, logical and physical diagrams, interface contracts and transition plans
- Define non-functional requirements and design patterns for scalability, availability, security, resilience, performance, observability and maintainability
- Drive alignment between business strategy, product roadmaps, enterprise architecture standards and engineering implementation
- Support the design and implementation of cloud-native, microservices, API-first and event-driven solutions
- Define and manage technical governance for application architecture, including architecture decisions, design reviews and technology standards
- Conduct architecture reviews and code reviews as required/requested by product and engineering teams
- Identify opportunities for technical innovation, reuse, simplification and the elimination of waste across existing solutions
- Evaluate technologies, vendors, data sources and partners that can help deliver digital capabilities
- Publish architecture standards, patterns, guardrails and documentation for engineering teams to use consistently
- Partner with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Engineers, Security, Infrastructure and Operations teams to deliver high-quality outcomes
- Support incident, problem and change processes by providing architectural insight into complex production issues
- Mentor and guide engineers and tech leads through influence, coaching and technical expertise without direct reporting line ownership
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics / Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of professional experience in software engineering / information technology, including significant experience in enterprise application delivery
- 5+ years of experience in solution architecture, application architecture or technical design leadership for large-scale platforms
- Proven track record of designing and delivering secure, scalable and maintainable business-critical systems
- Strong knowledge of full-stack application delivery using modern JavaScript / TypeScript technologies such as React, Angular and Node.js
- Deep understanding of multi-tier and distributed system architectures, REST APIs, JSON, XML, SOAP, SQL and application integration patterns
- Strong understanding of cloud architecture and cloud computing capabilities, preferably Azure and/or AWS
- Experience designing microservices, API gateways, containerised or serverless applications and event-driven architectures
- Practical understanding of SDLC, continuous integration and delivery, application security, quality assurance, DevSecOps and Agile based delivery
- Experience defining non-functional requirements for resiliency, scalability, performance, security, operability and observability
- Ability to develop conceptual, logical, physical and as-built architecture models and communicate them clearly
- Experience with architecture governance, technical decision records, design review processes and engineering standards
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to engineering teams and senior stakeholders
- Financial markets, capital markets or other regulated industry experience
- ServiceNow development or integration experience
- Azure Kubernetes Service, Kubernetes, Istio, serverless, API management or container platform experience
- Legacy application modernisation, refactoring or public cloud migration experience
- Observability, monitoring, SRE practices or production operability experience
- AI-assisted development, Copilot technologies or agent-based solution experience
- Experience evaluating third-party data, vendor solutions and external services
- Articulate, energetic person able to work alone or as part of a team
- Strong technical leadership with the ability to influence without formal authority
- Excellent attention to detail and a strong ability to think laterally to solve business problems
- Ability to balance strategic architecture thinking with practical delivery constraints
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills across complex technical and business domains
