We are working exclusively with a London based buy side firm looking to appoint a senior portfolio construction and management specialist into a sophisticated equity long/short strategy.

This is a high impact investment role working directly alongside the lead investor, with real influence over how the portfolio is constructed, positioned and managed.

The successful candidate will effectively act as the second set of eyes across the entire book and must bring genuine experience managing capital and taking responsibility for live portfolio outcomes.

This is not a pure stock picking role. The focus is on taking investment ideas and ensuring they are translated into the portfolio in the right way, through sizing, hedging, factor management, implementation and execution.

The role sits directly between investing, markets, portfolio construction and risk.

You will be expected to understand exactly what is driving portfolio performance, where unintended exposures are emerging, how individual positions interact with the wider book and where adjustments may be required as market conditions evolve.

This is not a traditional risk management position and it is not a pure quantitative role.

The client is looking for a genuine investor and markets person who has previously managed capital, understands the realities of running a live book and can work closely alongside a senior PM to help optimise how the portfolio behaves.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Taking a leading role in portfolio construction across an equity long/short strategy

• Translating investment ideas into effective sizing, positioning and implementation

• Applying prior capital management experience to live portfolio decisions

• Managing portfolio level hedging and understanding how individual positions interact across the wider book

• Monitoring factor, sector, style and market exposures

• Identifying unintended risks and areas of hidden concentration

• Understanding what is driving portfolio returns and individual P&L

• Separating genuine stock specific alpha from broader market, factor and sector effects

• Working directly with the lead investor on gross exposure, net exposure, concentration and overall portfolio balance

• Supporting execution and ensuring investment views are implemented efficiently

• Using data and quantitative analysis to improve portfolio decisions without becoming overly model driven

• Acting as a trusted sounding board on positioning, risk, portfolio behaviour and market conditions

We are looking for candidates with:

• Significant experience within equity long/short investing

• Proven experience managing capital within a live investment portfolio

• Strong practical experience in portfolio construction and portfolio management

• Deep understanding of hedging, factor exposures and portfolio risk

• A strong grasp of market execution and how implementation impacts returns

• The ability to diagnose why a portfolio is making or losing money

• A data driven or quantamental mindset combined with strong investment judgement

• Genuine markets intuition rather than a purely quantitative or risk focused background

• Experience taking responsibility for real capital, portfolio exposures and investment outcomes

• Strong commercial judgement and an investor first mentality

• An energetic, engaged and highly collaborative personality

Candidates are likely to have built their experience within a hedge fund, sophisticated asset manager, family office or comparable investment environment and should have spent meaningful time managing or helping manage live capital alongside senior portfolio managers.

This opportunity should appeal to someone who wants to remain extremely close to investment decision making and who has already experienced the responsibility of managing capital, but whose particular strength lies in understanding how to construct, manage and continuously improve the overall portfolio.

You will work directly with the lead investor and have significant influence over how the strategy is positioned, implemented and ultimately scaled.
