We are looking for a Risk and Best Practice Lawyer to join our supportive and collaborative Risk and Best Practice team at Burges Salmon.

This is a varied role where you will help the firm manage matters that could lead to claims, complaints or regulatory breaches. You will work closely with colleagues across our legal and Business Services teams, providing practical advice and helping us identify and address emerging risks before they materialise.

The opportunity would particularly suit someone with a background in professional indemnity insurance, law firm risk or regulatory compliance. We're also keen to hear from lawyers with a contentious private practice background, including general litigation or insurance disputes experience.

What you'll be doing

Working closely with colleagues across the firm, you will:-

• Assist with the management and investigation of potential professional negligence issues
• Liaise with internal stakeholders, plus brokers, insurers and panel law firms
• Support the investigation and handling of client complaints
• Investigate potential regulatory breaches, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and recommending practical remedial action
• Help respond to enquiries from regulatory bodies
• Support the firm's practising certificate renewal processes and regulatory authorisations
• Contribute to the annual professional indemnity insurance renewal and other business insurance programmes
• Work with our Resourcing team on the regulatory and insurance aspects of onboarding senior lateral hires
• Design and deliver engaging training to legal and Business Services colleagues
• Monitor legal, regulatory and market developments, helping the firm identify emerging risks and areas of potential exposure
• Contribute to the continued development of our risk management frameworks, policies and procedures

What we're looking for

You will be a qualified solicitor, CiLEx-qualified lawyer (or otherwise legally qualified.)

We're interested in hearing from candidates who can demonstrate:

• Experience in law firm risk management, regulatory compliance or professional indemnity law, or a contentious background such as general litigation or insurance disputes
• Knowledge of the SRA Standards and Regulations, with knowledge of the relevant requirements in Scotland and Northern Ireland being advantageous
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• The ability to explain complex issues clearly and confidently to different audiences
• A collaborative and supportive approach to working with colleagues
• A proactive mindset and the confidence to identify and resolve issues
• The ability to balance competing priorities and respond appropriately to urgent matters
• A willingness to take ownership of tasks and projects while managing your workload effectively

Our Risk and Best Practice team plays a central role in helping Burges Salmon work safely, ethically and efficiently.

The team brings together specialists in regulatory compliance, financial crime, information security, data protection, business insurance and operational risk. It is an open, supportive and solutions-focused team that works closely with colleagues across the firm.

You'll also build relationships with external stakeholders, including regulators, brokers, insurers and other law firms, giving you exposure to a broad range of risk and compliance matters.
