Position Summary
Freberg Environmental is seeking a Transportation Renewal Underwriter / Account Executive to join our Transportation team. This role is responsible for underwriting and managing an established transportation renewal portfolio, maintaining strong broker relationships, and supporting profitable growth across the book of business. The ideal candidate has commercial transportation underwriting experience, thrives in a collaborative environment, and enjoys building long-term partnerships with wholesale brokers.

This position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced transportation underwriters and program managers while developing a clear path toward future leadership opportunities within the underwriting organization.

Location: Denver, CO or Chicago, IL preferred. Open to remote candidates for the right individual. Denver-based employees will participate in a light hybrid schedule.

What will your job entail?

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Portfolio Management
  • Underwrite and manage a transportation-focused renewal portfolio, balancing profitability, retention, and service objectives.
  • Review and evaluate renewals, endorsements, loss history, operational exposures, and account performance to determine appropriate coverage terms and pricing.
  • Analyze commercial transportation risks, including trucking, fleet, and commercial auto exposures.
  • Manage a small assigned book of business while supporting broader portfolio initiatives.
  • Maintain underwriting discipline and consistently apply carrier guidelines and authority levels.
  • Identify opportunities to improve account profitability, retention, and premium growth.

Broker Relationship Management
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with wholesale broker partners and select retail agencies.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource by providing responsive service and coverage guidance.
  • Negotiate renewal terms, conditions, and pricing while maintaining strong distribution partner relationships.
  • Collaborate with brokers to retain profitable business and identify opportunities for growth within existing accounts.
  • Deliver a high level of service throughout the renewal and endorsement process.

Team Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Program Managers, senior underwriters, and cross-functional teams to support portfolio performance and client satisfaction.
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to identify cross-selling opportunities and strategic solutions for brokers and insureds.
  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented culture by sharing knowledge, market insights, and best practices.
  • Support organizational growth initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.

Compliance & Operations
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, carrier requirements, regulatory standards, and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting documentation, account records, and file management.
  • Utilize underwriting systems and technology platforms to efficiently manage workflows and underwriting activity.
  • Assist with endorsement processing and policy maintenance activities as needed.
  • Monitor portfolio trends and renewal performance to support business planning and decision-making.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, including at least 3 years focused on transportation, trucking, or commercial auto risks.
  • Experience underwriting renewal business, evaluating transportation exposures, and managing broker relationships within wholesale distribution channels.
  • Knowledge of commercial transportation risks, including non-admitted commercial auto, fleet, trucking, hazmat, and other specialized transportation exposures.
  • Strong underwriting, risk assessment, analytical, and decision-making skills with the ability to balance profitability, retention, and growth objectives.
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and negotiation skills with a proven ability to work effectively with brokers, carriers, and internal business partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, team-focused environment.
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to quickly learn underwriting, policy administration, and CRM platforms.
  • Property & Casualty License required or ability to obtain within 45 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field
  • Familiarity with transportation-focused markets such as Northland, Nationwide, Carolina Casualty, Canal, or similar transportation underwriting environments.
  • Experience using Salesforce, Policy Decisions, or comparable underwriting and policy administration systems.
  • CPCU, ARM, AU, or other industry designations.
  • Existing relationships within the transportation insurance marketplace.

Training & Development

Freberg Environmental is committed to investing in the success of new team members. During onboarding, the selected candidate will travel to Denver for in-person training and mentorship with senior transportation underwriters. This hands-on experience is designed to accelerate product knowledge, underwriting expertise, and integration into the team.

The target salary range for this position is $76,000.00 - $95,000.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
