Why other banks in Asia would love to hire Standard Chartered’s new director

Patfield Chow can consider himself in high demand. For one, he’s just been hired into a senior role at Standard Chartered in Hong Kong. More importantly, he’s developed skills in digital transformation, a function that’s become increasingly important to the growth ambitions of banks in Asia.

Chow joined Stan Chart earlier this month as a director in digital platform and experience, having previously worked in Fidelity International’s Hong Kong office, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He started at Fidelity only in July last year as an associate director in digital solutions and was promoted this June to global digital experience lead. Chow worked for BlackRock in Hong Kong from 2010 to 2018, latterly as a vice president in APAC distribution solutions/digital wealth.

Jobs in digital transformation are in demand right now as banks (and other companies) in Hong Kong, Singapore and globally undergo large-scale technology overhauls aimed at replacing legacy systems, encouraging customers to use online channels, and automating previously paper-based procedures.

Chow’s new firm, Stan Chart, is a case in point. Its 2018 annual report, released in February, states that it spent $1.6bn on tech last year, up from $900m in 2015, but investment into legacy systems flatlined during that time as digital transformation initiatives took hold.

Chow is not the only transformation expert that Stan Chart has hired recently. Last month Singapore-based Felimy Greene, formerly chief digital and client experience officer for Citi’s Asia and EMEA consumer bank, moved to Standard Chartered as COO and global head of onboarding for retail banking, a job focused on driving digital transformation within the function.

Other banks in Asia are recruiting people with digital transformation experience. As we reported in August, Wai Lam Sham, who led corporate strategy for APAC asset management at Deutsche Bank, has joined DBS as an executive director for digital value capture.

The banking sector has also become a headhunting ground for transformation specialists. As we noted last week, Vishnu Bhan, a senior vice president focused on client engagement and digital solutions in DBS’s institutional banking group, has moved to Singtel as director of digitalisation, group enterprise.
