There's been another big exit from HSBC in Asia.

Regional COO leaves HSBC in Hong Kong for new job in Sydney

Scott Ellis, HSBC’s Hong Kong-based regional chief operating officer for wealth and personal banking, has left. Ellis has returned to Sydney and will take up an undisclosed new position there later this month, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He had been in his most recent HSBC job for just over two years and was “responsible for all areas of risk, delivery and transformation in retail and digital banking across 10 markets in Asia”. He was HSBC’s Australian country head for wealth management between 2014 and 2018, where his remit included risk, equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, distribution, digital, advice, product management, transformation, and regulatory engagement.

Ellis cut his teeth in the UK finance sector with firms including HSBC, Lloyds TSB, and Barclays from 1993 to 2002. He then relocated to Australia and worked for Westpac for more than 12 years, latterly as head of private, premium and commercial for BT Financial Group, the wealth division of the Australian bank.

Ellis has left HSBC’s newly combined wealth and personal banking unit as it expands in Asia. HSBC CEO Noel Quinn has made the bank’s wider Asian wealth management franchise a priority. As announced in August, the firm is hiring 2,000 to 3,000 wealth planners in Guangzhou and Shanghai by 2024.

Other notable exits from HSBC in Hong Kong in recent months include head of retail business banking for Asia Satyam Agrawal, who has joined Indian tech firm GlobalLinker, and global equities chief Hossein Zaimi, who departed in July.
