Google demands both sales and tech skills as it hires in Hong Kong

If you want a cloud job at Google in Asia, Singapore is the obvious place to look. The US tech giant has 19 cloud-focused roles based in its APAC headquarters in the city state. Google is, however, also upping its cloud recruitment in its much smaller Hong Kong office as it competes with the likes of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Alibaba Cloud, and Microsoft’s Azure to win market share from banks and other clients. Of the 17 Hong Kong jobs on Google’s careers site, eight are for cloud positions.

While most of these cloud jobs are for tech professionals, they also require interaction with Google’s clients. The infrastructure modernisation specialist opening, for example, demands experience leading IT strategy discussion and designing cloud adoption plans. But when you’re on the job, you’ll have to work with the sales team to introduce Google Cloud to potential customers.

As a partner engineer (another job that’s advertised on Google’s Hong Kong careers site) you come in once clients have purchased Google Cloud products to “facilitate making their work more productive, mobile, and collaborative”. You’ll need to combine expertise in cloud computing concepts (e.g. big data, PaaS, and IaaS technologies) with customers service skills.

A similar hybrid skill set is needed to land Google Cloud’s customer engineering manager role, which requires working cross-functionally with product, support, engineering and sales teams. The online job description for this role hints that Google needs to recruit more cloud developers in Hong Kong this year. You will have to “hire” people into your team as well as lead current team members.

If you want to move from a cloud role at a bank to Google Cloud, you need to convince Google that you are adaptable enough to make what is potentially a challenging transition. “In banking, the major cloud focus is on architecture design, implementation and BAU support, while roles in cloud companies like Google, Azure, AWS and Alibaba involve pre-sales, facing clients, relationship building, and providing architecture design and solution proposals,” says Danny Kwan, a managing consultant at technology recruiters Pinpoint Asia in Hong Kong. “You also need to be presentable on stage to do live demos and presentations,” he adds.

Nevertheless, cloud developers in Asia have joined Google from banks. Carl Bachman Kharazmi, the former APAC head of cloud engineering at DBS, is now working for Google as a Singapore-based cloud engineering lead. In 2019, Google hired Barbara Crane as head of financial services industry, Southeast Asia, for Google Cloud. Crane spent most of her career at banks, including HSBC, BNP Paribas and NatWest.
