An "exceptional" Google DeepMind AI expert reemerges at a hedge fund
Google Deepmind alumni are sought after by everyone from Dmitry Balyasny to Mark Zuckerberg. It's not just Dmitry, though - other hedge funds want them too, including a very fast-growing one in London.

Grzegorz Swirszcz has joined Qube Research & Technologies in London as a quant research director. He previously spent over eight years as a staff research scientist at DeepMind in its appropriately named deep learning group, "working on building general artificial intelligence." He also previously spent over a decade in finance at IBM's Watson Research Centre, working on financial modelling and machine learning as early as 2004.
Other DeepMind hires by hedge funds include Su Wang, who joined Balyasny last month. He's working in its applied AI team, creating an AI chatbot called BAMChatGPT.
Swirszcz's job title suggests that he's shifted away from applied AI, although Qube has not responded to a request for comment. He wouldn't be the first DeepMinder to do so; Grégoire Delétang, another ex-staff research scientist, joined Squarepoint Capital in July as a quantitative researcher.
Swirszcz has some big fans in finance. Two Sigma data science MD Claudia Perlich says he has "a highly unusual breadth of exceptional skills." Sean Slotterback, a former portfolio manager at HFT firm Tower Research Capital, says he's "one of the top people in his field."
