Goldman Sachs' most junior bankers don't want to speak to you unless it's in person
If you want to speak to a junior Goldman Sachs banker over the phone, there's a 99% chance they'd rather be doing something else. The bank recently released its annual summer analyst survey, which regularly asks Goldman Sachs interns what their preferred method of communication is; for the fifth year running, phone calls ranked dead last by some distance.

Roughly 2,100 of Goldman's ~2500 summer analysts responded to the survey. In-person work was the most popular communication, preferred by 42% of interns, slightly down from 47% last year. Interns said that working in the office was most important for mentoring and "forming spontaneous connections," but not as important for completing deliverables. The bank was one of the earliest to bring staff back into the office five days per week post-COVID.
The love for in-office work may also stem from a desire to be away from their screens. 34% of interns said they have more than 20 hours of screentime per week, with 7% having over 31 hours. 70% of interns said they use screen time limiting tools as well.
Despite this, text-based communications grew in popularity. Team chatrooms were second favourite for the second year running, however the gap between it and in-person communication fell from 12% to just 2%. Email's popularity more than doubled from 5% to 11%. The ability to check your responses with AI before sending them may have influenced this; outside of work, 19% said they use AI tools to verify facts and 36% said they use it to support their writing.
