Now RBC's global head of investment grade credit trading is leaving

As we have reported here and here, Royal Bank of Canada's European credit trading team appears to have sprung a leak. It's also been hiring, but one of its recruits left for Citi two months after joining.

Now it seems that the team leader is among those leaving. Sources say that RBC announced internally today that James Chapman, the global head of investment grade credit trading, is departing. Chapman had worked at the bank for 10 years since joining from Deutsche Bank.

It's not clear where he's going next. Neither Chapman nor RBC promptly responded to a request to comment. Colleagues, who described Chapman as a "great guy" suggested he might be retiring instead of joining Citi, or maybe a hedge fund.

It's also not clear whether Chapman will be replaced. Sources at RBC say that Christophe Coutte, who was promoted to run trading in Europe in March 2025, has been taking a growing interest in investment grade credit, so maybe Chapman's role will be wound up into his purview.
