Revolut's new office gives for free what JPMorgan bankers have to pay for
It's not just the investment banks moving into swanky new offices; fintech bank Revolut is getting in on the act. It recently announced plans to hire 1,000 employees in the UK and just unveiled a finally opened up its new global headquarters at the YY Building in Canary Wharf. It has plenty of new amenities you might also find at JPMorgan's $3bn New York headquarters.
Revolut's 113k square foot office features an auditorium, a terrace, 58 meeting rooms, 107 video call rooms, a multi-faith room and a mindfulness room. A video posted by CEO Nik Storonsky also showed off the office's new gym, which is available to Revolut staff free of charge. JPMorgan's new office, meanwhile, features a bigger wellness facility that also includes nutrition consultations and is run by an 'employee wellbeing programming' firm... but staff have to pay to access it. Discussions on Reddit at the time the wellness centre was announced heavily criticized the decision. They suggested that JPMorgan's London office also charges staff a fee to access its gym, but they noted that the fee is "much cheaper than any surrounding gym in the area."
There are plenty of things JPMorgan's office has that Revolut's doesn't. The US bank developed a signature scent for its offices, for example, and has an in-house Irish Pub. The biggest difference between the two offices, however, is that Revolut doesn't care whether or not you show up there. Earlier this year, as JPMorgan staff lamented that they were being forced to work in the office five days per week, Storonsky espoused the benefits of hiring remote workers, noting that Revolut "care[s] more about what you do than where you do it."
What's similar about the experience of working at JPMorgan and Revolut is the intensity. JPMorgan makes many of its amenities available 24/7 and headhunters speaking to Business Insider saw that as an acknowledgement of the long work weeks in banking that can exceed 100 hours. Revolut, meanwhile, has never shied away from its hyper-competitive culture; Storonsky frowned upon the concept of wellbeing-based check-ins in past interviews, noting that the best people "just need to have fun on the job."
