The MD who built BofA's central risk desk in EMEA moved to crypto

Shrijit Plappally, the former head of Bank of America's EMEA central risk book, has joined Galaxy, the self-described cryptocurrency investment bank, as head of electronic trading.

Plappally, who didn't respond to a request to comment for this article, broadcast his new role on LinkedIn. He previously spent 20 years at BofA, which he joined as a summer intern in 2005.

Plapally became head of BofA's EMEA central risk book in 2016 and is thought to have set up the function for the bank in Europe. Central risk desks are highly quantitative operations that aggregate and hedge against trading risks for banks as a whole. 

Plapally's exit from BofA comes after the bank restructured its markets business earlier this month. 

Galaxy's other notable recent hires include Ryop Shimizu, a former Goldman Sachs engineer who just arrived as an engineering MD in the US. 

Bitcoin is on track to have its worst month since 2022. In the three months ending September 2025, Galaxy said its gross revenues were up 223%, driven partly by record results in its global markets business.
