Why this finance professional has five designations - and counting

As the world of work grows increasingly complex and competitive, finance professionals are looking to acquire designations as they advance in their career to create a market edge.

And Dr Emilio Pang has not one, not, two, not three – but five such credentials.

“My drive to constantly upskill is fueled by a deep-seated intellectual curiosity,” he says. Pang is a Chartered Financial Analyst, Chartered Actuary, Chartered Valuation Surveyor and Chartered Global Management Accountant.

He has just earned the Certified Practising Accountant designation at CPA Australia.

“In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the ability to connect disparate ideas and disciplines – basically, ‘connect the dots’ – is essential,” he says. “Each chartership I pursue adds a new bandwidth to my knowledge spectrum, enabling me to tackle challenges with a fresh perspective and think outside the box.”

Based in Hong Kong, Pang graduated with a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering and holds two master’s degrees in finance and law, plus a doctoral degree with a research focus on environmental financial products.

Having clocked stints at HSBC, Italian bank Intesa and Italian insurer Generali across a two-decade finance career, he is currently investment director at a family office, where he focuses on property investment projects.

His line of work meant he had planned to pursue the CPA designation from several years ago. But Pang soon realised he could leverage CPA Australia’s Member Pathway Agreement to fast-track the process. This is one of the many pathways available to finance and accounting professionals to design the most optimal route to become recognised as a CPA.

For example, under CPA Australia’s Experience-Based Pathway, applicants with over five years of experience in accounting, finance, auditing or consulting roles may be exempted from the Foundation program and up to five CPA Program subjects, based on prior work experience.

Despite his wealth of existing credentials, Pang sought the CPA for its strong foundations in accounting, auditing and taxation – which not only enhance his professional credibility, but enable him to conduct holistic financial management that integrates strategic planning with meticulous reporting.

“Being a CPA ensures accuracy in financial records, effective tax planning and corporate governance,” he says. “This broadens career opportunities, offering versatility in roles such as CFO and consultant.”

“In today’s dynamic corporate environment, the role of CFO has evolved into a critical partnership with the CEO, making the CFO a vital ally in value creation across diverse business functions,” he adds.

“This transformation calls for a strategic mindset, enabling CFOs to shape portfolio strategies, navigate major investment and financing decisions, and effectively communicate with stakeholders. Engaging in programs like CPA Australia can significantly enhance these strategic capabilities.”

Broader horizons

Indeed, the benefits of a CPA qualification extend far beyond accounting. The curriculum, which includes subjects such as Global Strategy and Leadership, teaches members “the importance of continual education amid a constantly-changing global business landscape,” Pang says.

As he manages properties across Hong Kong, China, the UK, Australia, and Japan, this global remit presents unique challenges and opportunities.

“By enrolling in the CPA Program at CPA Australia, particularly the corporate governance course, I have acquired essential knowledge about the Australian business landscape, which is vital for managing our Australian investments effectively,” he reflects.

“The CPA qualification not only enhances my understanding of Australian business practices, but also equips me with transferable skills applicable to other countries and markets.”

Pang has also visited over 70 countries and over 100 UNESCO World Heritage sites in an intentional effort to develop multicultural sensitivity and build up his perspective on geoeconomics and geopolitics.

“Aspiring CFOs should prioritize expanding their knowledge in these essential domains to position themselves as informed leaders in a swiftly changing business landscape,” he adds.

“Understanding of history and politics is essential for CFOs looking to thrive in the intricacies of the global market and empowers them to adeptly manage emerging challenges in the new world order.”

Here, he adds, the CPA Program can benefit. “By delving into various key areas, from financial management to ethics and governance, members develop a solid understanding that not only builds their confidence but also ignites a desire for further learning.”

“As they progress through the program, they come to appreciate the notion that ‘The More You Know, The More You Realize You Don't Know’. This mindset not only prepares them for the CPA qualification but also fosters an enduring commitment to professional advancement and expertise in their future careers.”

As for himself, Pang plans to parlay his CPA qualification into furthering his personal interests in environmental finance and the new space economy.

This includes ambitions to develop innovative funding solutions that combat climate change and halt biodiversity loss, and to explore opportunities in the emerging space sector, which is projected to be worth US$1.8 trillion by 2035.

“CPA Australia’s comprehensive curriculum enhances my skills in risk control and corporate governance – essential components for developing impactful products in these emerging fields,” he says.

With his broad investment management remit and plans to explore environmental markets and even cislunar space, Pang truly embodies the CPA promise: ‘Three letters to limitless’. With global reach and recognition, the designation enables members to drive positive change in business and society, unlock new opportunities, and shape the future of their profession.

“My personal goals center around leveraging my extensive experience to make meaningful contributions to burgeoning fields,” Pang reflects. “The CPA designation will be instrumental in achieving these goals.”
