A primer for summer interns on fixed income trading floors

Banks, like most big companies, are usually quite protective of their internal materials. If you’re about to start a job in one, on an internship for example, that can make things a bit intimidating. Luckily, one bank is a bit more open.

A recent social media post from Jordan Rochester, Mizuho’s head of fixed income, currencies, and commodities (FICC) strategy in EMEA, was rather straightforward: an entire, 57-page primer for summer interns in his FICC sales & trading team. “To help the interns settle in we put together a primer on what areas of focus they need to succeed,” he said.

If you’re starting your internship this summer, it will be invaluable to you. “This stuff is gold dust,” said Muj Sheikh, a former private banker and trading consultant at JPMorgan, UBS, BlackRock, Morgan Stanley, and many others. “Where were you at the start of my career. Thanks so much for putting this stuff together and putting it out there for our benefit,” Sheikh said.

Rochester is relatively new to Mizuho. He joined the firm two years ago to head up FICC strategy, having spent 10 years in Nomura’s FX strategy team in London before that. “It's designed to be just confusing enough, to actually be useful,” Rochester said about the primer. “Hopefully the summer's experience on the desk should fill that gap.”
