Top hardware engineer leaves DE Shaw biotech job for finance at Hudson River

DE Shaw is an interesting place. Not only does it have a high paying quantitative hedge fund which employs artists and writers in non-investment roles, but it runs a research arm that has a super computer engaged in complex molecular simulations.

Now, one of the senior technologists working on this super computer has announced his departure.

Timothy Correira, a research engineer at DE Shaw research who spent the past decade working on Anton 3, DE Shaw's custom designed super computer which looks at biological molecules, is leaving for Hudson River Trading. There, he will presumably still work on high speed computing, but with a less socially valued.

In 2021, Anton 3 was claimed to be 100 times faster than rival computers, despite also consuming low amounts of energy.

Hardware has become an increasingly important battleground in the high frequency trading space. Engineers like David Snowdon in Sydney are widely respected as leaders in the space.
