The elite Amazon jobs that start in Singapore in March
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has opened up Singapore-based positions within its elite Tech U Associate graduate recruitment programme. Instead of going straight into entry-level roles at the tech company, a “select group of new AWS employees” will receive about a year of training in cloud computing to prepare them for full-time jobs.
The programme consists of a six-month instructor-led, project-based curriculum, followed by six months of on-the-job training. The first half of the Tech U course includes eight two-week sprints, with each focused on a “simulated customer scenario” in domains such as big data, enterprise applications, and IoT and AI. Amazon promises to provide you with “accelerated career development” and “the soft skills required to launch a successful career”.
There are two Tech U vacancies on offer in Singapore, for a solutions architect and a professional services consultant. Applicants must have graduated with a Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related fields before March 2021, when the training starts. Experience with at least one out of six programming languages – Java, Python, Ruby, Node.js, C#, or C++ – is essential.
A technology recruiter in Singapore says he expects competition for the jobs to be “intense”, because places are in short supply and the dedicated training could give Tech U associates an edge over other young technologists at the firm.
Reddit forums about Tech U in the US – the programme runs in several countries – suggest there are about five interview rounds. One successful candidate posted that three of the five interviews focused on behavioural questions (some of these were about Amazon’s 14 leadership principles), which he answered using the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method. He also did a tech-related interview and gave a presentation.
If you land the solutions architect traineeship, for example, it’s highly likely that this will be your permanent role when the programme ends in early 2022. However, comments on Reddit suggest that Amazon is open to Tech U trainees ultimately asking to be placed in other teams if they develop an interest in a particular part of the AWS business.
